Finally, everything was done. Sorta of.
An era seemed to have gone away, something seemed to have shifted with his passing.
Then the sorting, weighing, disposing, realigning and reassigning.
His valuables had no value in this time; his sentiments would not be honored. After all he was not going to be there any more.
Soon nothing would remain. He would be forgotten, his impact would vanish, his presence forgotten and his memory lost
Even the clock, his treasured masterpiece, was junked and relegated to the closet, irrelevant in a digital world.
Would she be too, she wondered.
Poignant. Will finally happen to all of us, ashes to ashes…

A lot in here – loss, the passing of time, the world moving on… nice one!

Nothing like sorting through someone else’s personal belongings to make you reflect on your own life. Good one.

Excellent last line. With all the new technology coming along a lot of the older generations will feel like this already.

Dear Sabina,
From dust we’ve come and unto dust we shall return. A good illustration.

You’ve written a good short meditation on the transience of our self-importance. However, one thing that can linger on well after our death is the values we have lived by. Our children acquire them; improve them; and pass them on in turn to their own children.

Yes of course. That’s true. Tks

We only live as long as people remember us.

Exactly! We may be alive but not really alive! I think that’s why we are in trepidation about old age!😢

Stuff is stuff. We attach more importance to it, especially when it belonged to someone else. In the end, though… it must be taken care of (speaking as one who is going through stuff!)

OF course.
My take is that do we get relegated to the storeroom once we are old, just like the stuff!
Thanks

I’ve already felt a slight hint of wondering how soon I’ll be relegated to the corner of irrelevance. Had a new young pastor who made it clear that the older folks should just gracefully face into the sunset, and that was when I was just barely 60. Not going to church there any more 🙂 This story rang true for me.

A word of encouragement – we are never unwanted and there is no retirement in the Body of Christ. According to the Biblical model, those of the gray hairs are of great value to God and are a valued treasure to the Body of Christ. Paul points out that the elders are the source of wisdom and teaching to the younger people of the church.

Yes, thank you for the reminder. We are now in a church that values the elders. No point in staying where you are not valued.

Lovely story, Sabina. It’s like the Biblical saying, “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” It seems far away until we one day we wake up to find ourselves close to it. Good writing. 🙂 — Suzanne
