Kala, have all seer (gift) items ready, and stored? There is just a week left for the wedding, and you know, once relatives start arriving, we won’t have time!
Don’t worry, Akka (elder sister), everything has been put together. I have them all in that room in the renandum kattu (inner courtyard).
What about the seer varisai in silver, eversilver, brass, and copper? Have the padi, alaku, kudum, unda, kunda, and all other items kept ready?
Yes, yes, yes, Akka, everything is ready. All is left is to arrange the display in proper order.
Appaadi (sigh), now I can relax. As the family’s senior lady, Paramparai maanam (family honor) is my concern!
*Chettiyar families in South India are very big on weddings, especially their gifts called seer varisai. They are merchant families and celebrate marriages in a big way.

Dear Sabina,
A lot of prep goes into a wedding, doesn’t it. Nicely done.

Indian weddings are huge celebrations, and this particular community goes all out.
I am not part of these people but my native place on my father’s side is about 10 kms from there. In my childhood, I attended one such, and recently my nephew attended one.
My twin sister and I had a twin wedding. Our combined festivities last time days, a real time of catching up with extended family since it was the first wedding on both my parents side!
BTW, I love big, fat, Indian weddings, something that annoys my kids!

From what little I’ve seen, the clothes are amazing and I’ll bet the food is, too. 😀
