Hi Dad, why are these hills gray, dry, and dirty-looking?
They are mine residues and diggings piled up here.
Why here? Aren’t they polluting the land?
This area used to be marshy with no way to reach those real natural mountains you see ahead.
Where we are going for our vacation which is supposed to be beautiful and aesthetic?
Yes, it was unreachable until this area was filled in, and a road laid down.
Ironic that the way to beauty lies through wasteland converted by waste disposal into a passage!
True, but it solved two issues, sorry, three issues at one go!
This isn’t a story a lot of people would tell. Well done.

We thought the same about peat bogs. Now we know they’re important carbon sinks

Dear Sabina,
Interesting how they got from here to there. Nicely told.

Too much destruction is done in the name of improvement. We’re fortunate that nature and our planet are so resilient.

Sabina, good title and story. Your story reminds me of Garbage Mountain that I pass by every time I drive to see my son and his family. It is a landfill that used to be beautiful pastureland. I roll up the windows and try not to think about it.
